Fear and loathing in Baltic

If there is any kind of truth in life, we had a mission to find it. Well, to be honest we weren’t trying to find it but if it would pass by we definitely would siege the moment and WE DID.

WED 16th of August

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.

It was four o’clock in the morning when my cell phone told me it is time to get up. I (the designated driver and the daddy of everything with big D!) packed my bags, tried to eat something and drank some tea and called Matte, who was already up and sounded like he was ready to roll, maybe even more than I was. I wasn’t as excited as I had been many times before, but it was mainly because I had a bad feeling about our car, let’s call him Benny. I was still hoping for the best and started driving to pick up Samppa (did you know that if you play the E from the bass it has the same vibration frequency as the clitoris, 41hertz). Samppa had the same kind of feelings, but as we talked it was becoming more and more clear that we were ready for anything!!! After picking up Matte, our goal was to get to the ferry that was heading to Tallinn, Estonia. Wheel of Dharma crew; Visa, Punch, Vellu and Luigi were already in Helsinki and there was also Antti (monkey see, monkey do-NÄÄS) and Vappu who was driving the van.

And we did arrive on time. It all looked good and the mood was starting to rise, but as we got to the check-point, Benny showed some signs of not feeling so well. There was steam coming from under our hood and as we popped it open we could see Benny throwing up. I don’t know what he had been drinking but it sure was not the time or the place to throw up. Benny was as reliable as a drunken Finnish punker can be. We drove our car 10 meters away from the checkpoint and started arguing about what to do? Benny’s opinion was that he wasn’t on top of the world and he was rumbling something about mommy. At this point the time was running out and I was totally loosing my nerves. We decided to get in to the ferry and after that find some car service in Tallinn. The trip with the ferry followed the routine of a common ferry trip. Some of us started drinking (a beer in the hand is worth two in the fridge), some of us slept, and some of us hung out on the deck drinking.

In Tallinn it took us 3 hours to find a car service for Benny. Benny was showing signs of improvement, but it was clear that it wouldn’t be an easy route to Riga where we were supposed to play the same night. The guys at the Service didn’t really see anything wrong with the car. Instead of doing anything, the service man spoke the usual “Serviceman” talk, which goes like this: “I can put a dick in my mouth if I want to, but I don’t want to, but you can put a dick in your mouth if you want to, but I don’t want to put my dick in your mouth, but if you want to you can put your dick in your mouth… “. It was more than obvious that it was just a waste of our time. We put some water in the cooler and started driving to Riga. After stopping many times to see the condition of Benny we decided to continue as far as we could go with this piece of shit made of metal and parts that are only legal in Germany. On the way to Riga some of us stopped to swim in the sea (like we weren't in a hurry already!!!), and Frivolvol was inventing a whole new language, the Samppa language. We had an idea to build something new that would be the total language of love. Me and Samppa were really good of inventing new words, but had trouble remembering them. Samppa was much worse than I was, but I have to say my memory had some capacity errors too. Matte and Antti were both really big help on the back seat. They were the pen and paper that we were looking for but didn’t find.

In Riga we found Ainars and Lauris, boys that seemed to be so full of energy that you could start a fireplace with them, waiting us on this big monument. It was really amazing to meet the people that could organize a show in one day (Flashback: We found out on Tuesday that our show in Club Depo was cancelled??? Still don’t know what went wrong, but these 2 heroes of honest could arrange us a gig in one day. I’ll drink to that. Many times in the future too.) Lauris told us that we were going to play in this place called Zako, jumped in the car and kept screaming “GO GO GO!” next to me and I felt like red lights didn’t even exist. I don’t know if the police car behind us felt it too, but the relief when they drove by without even giving a glimpse towards our direction is still in my heart.

Our gig was quite good considering the fact that Antti had arrived from the States to Helsinki on Tuesday so we hadn’t played together in 2 months. To be honest, I don't think he got one single chord right in the first song. Wheel of Dharma was rocking too and the band that played before us was also excellent fun. After the show, we drove to Ainars' house and few of us fell asleep straight away like cats in the cradle. One really small cat tried to eat Samppa’s hair. As I watched it fighting with Samppa, a feeling of peace and satisfaction ran through my body. A day to remember.
